Paul Morgan (Hugh Grant) is an NYC attorney who is separated from his wife Meryl (Sarah Jessica Parker), a successful NYC real estate broker. Paul admitted to having a one-night affair and Meryl has not forgiven him.
One evening after a charity event, they witness a murder. Unfortunately the killer realizes he has been observed, and so Paul and Meryl end up in the Federal Witness Protection Program, relocated to the tiny town of Ray, Wyoming. They are staying at the home of Clay and Emma Wheeler (Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen), who represent local law enforcement in Ray, Wyoming. Unfortunately, Meryl is unable to isolate herself from New York City, the killer discovers their whereabouts and comes to Ray to eliminate Paul and Meryl.
Written and directed by Marc Lawrence (Two Weeks Notice, Music and Lyrics) this is yet another mediocre city-slicker-in-the-great-outdoors comedy. The story feels as though it was written for a college screenwriting class, plot points are telegraphed far in advance, the jokes border on the slapstick, there's no memorable dialogue, and precious little chemistry between Grant and Parker. Conversely, there is actual chemistry between Elliott and Steenburgen, and these two supporting actors end up stealing the film from Grant and Parker. You will never get back the ninety minutes of your life that you spend watching this film.
