Somewhere in Time (1980) [PG] ****

This is a beautiful, haunting romance about a successful dramatist who wills himself back in time sixty-eight years to find the actress with whom he’s fallen in love. The screenplay, costumes, sets and lush, romantic music by John Barry all help us suspend disbelief. Jane Seymour, as Elise McKenna, and Christopher Reeve, as Richard Collier, have excellent romantic chemistry.

One enigma is the pocket watch that Richard gives to Elise in 1912, and Elise returns to him in 1972, as she pleads with him to come back to me. Another is the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, by Rachmaninoff, which Richard hums to Elise in 1912, years before it was written in 1934.

While film critics were not kind to Somewhere in Time, audiences simply loved it. In fact, the success of the film generated the formation of a website for INSITE, the International Network of Somewhere in Time enthusiasts. If you enjoyed The Lake House, I predict you will love Somewhere in Time.
